The old stone hotel was replaced in the later nineteenth century by a richly ornamented Italianate style two-storey building which incorporated a shop. The building remains substantially intact as a distinctive nineteenth century facet of the character of Victoria Parade, although the stucco has been painted and some minor alterations made.
Sir John Franklin was a well-known explorer who was also Governor of Tasmania from 1836 to 1843. John and Elizabeth Davidson were associated with the hotel from its opening in1853. Mrs Davidon took over as licensee in 1862 after her husband's death and remained in charge until 1899, possibly the longest licence-holding in a Collingwood hotel. The hotel finally closed on 31 December 1925.
This building was acquired by the GURNER GROUP along with neighbouring buildings at 1-57 Wellington Street and the Vine Hotel on the corner of Derby Street. After being boarded up for some time while building work proceeded, it was nicely refurbished as part of the adjoining large-scale development Victoria and Vine which was completed in 2023 but unfortunately the old hotel has yet to be sold or leased.
