We were saddened to learn of the death of Gillian Hibbins. She was well known as a writer, mainly on historical topics, but for us of course she was best known as the author of our publication A Short History of Collingwood. The book may be short but manages to cram both breadth and depth into every informative page. CHS commissioned Gillian to research and write the book not long after the City of Collingwood ceased to exist in the 1990s as a result of council amalgamations. Our faith in her was well-founded as she was generous with her time and intellect. She absorbed a great deal of material in a short space of time and produced a text that is both enjoyable to read and remarkably informative. As president of CHS I can’t count the number of times I return to this book and find useful material concerning whatever I am searching for. It remains the best selling title among our various publications.
